Meet our team
Lead Attorneys and Dream Team Leaders
Vanessa Rae Alonso
I’m the daughter of Mexican immigrants. I grew up in El Paso, Texas, on the border—where I learned how complex it can be to identify as both American and Mexican at the same time.
I come from a humble family. My mom was a teenager when I was born, but we never lacked love or support. Family always came first.
Since I was a little girl, I dreamed of helping others and making a difference. In law school, during a visit to the camps where immigrants worked, I reconnected with my culture, my language, and my roots. That’s when I knew I wanted to dedicate my life to immigration law—to help people like my own family.
Helping Latinos resolve their immigration status became my passion. Today, I specialize in finding creative solutions for people who’ve been rejected elsewhere. My goal is to make sure my clients feel safe, have access to work, and can live the life they deserve in the United States.
Why does this matter to you, someone looking for legal help?
Because I’m Latina, and your story matters to me. I think of your family the way I think of mine. My mission is to help you find peace by providing the legal protection you and your loved ones need—so you can live without fear, knowing you are not alone in this country
Christopher Alonso
I’m Puerto Rican, raised in New York by my grandmother—the strongest woman I’ve ever known. She taught me the value of hard work and kindness. She was my role model, working tirelessly to give me a better life.
After losing her shortly after 9/11, I joined the Army to protect my country and honor her legacy. Military service shaped me—it taught me the importance of defending others.
After 19 years as a special agent, I decided to pursue my dream of becoming a lawyer. That experience gave me unique tools to identify weaknesses in a case and turn them into strengths for my clients.
Today, I fight with everything I have to reduce or eliminate criminal charges and support immigration cases. In every case, I see a new opportunity to protect families with strength and commitment—just like I’ve always done, now through the law.
As a Latino, I deeply understand the challenges our community faces. I know what it feels like to be underestimated, and I’m committed to helping you build a better future. At Alonso & Alonso, we share that pride and that purpose.
We’re here to give you the best legal representation possible—because we know how much is at stake.

Green Cards and Permanent Residency
Obtaining a green card is one of the most important milestones in your immigration journey. A green card grants you lawful permanent resident status in the United States, allowing you to live and work anywhere in the country, travel freely, and eventually apply for citizenship.
Our Phoenix immigration attorneys help clients obtain green cards through various pathways, including:
- Family sponsorship
- Special immigrant categories
- Adjustment of status for those already in the U.S.
- Consular processing for those applying from abroad
We’ll evaluate your eligibility, prepare your application, and represent you throughout the entire process. With our guidance, you can navigate the green card process with confidence.
Work Permits and Employment Authorization
The ability to work legally in the United States is often essential for supporting yourself and your family. We help clients obtain work permits (Employment Authorization Documents) through various immigration programs, including:
- Work permits based on pending adjustment of status applications
- Employment authorization for VAWA self-petitioners
- Work permits for U visa and T visa applicants

Our team ensures your work permit application is filed correctly and on time, so you can maintain your employment authorization without interruption.
VAWA (Violence Against Women Act) Petitions
If you’ve been the victim of domestic violence, abuse, or extreme cruelty by a U.S. citizen or permanent resident spouse, parent or child, you may be eligible for immigration relief under VAWA. This law allows victims to self-petition for legal status without the abuser’s knowledge or cooperation.
Our Phoenix immigration lawyers handle VAWA cases with the utmost sensitivity and confidentiality. We understand the courage it takes to come forward, and we’re here to support you through every step of the process. VAWA relief can provide you with:
- Legal immigration status is independent of your abuser
- Work authorization
- A path to permanent residency
- Protection from deportation
You don’t have to stay in an abusive situation out of fear of losing your immigration status. Let us help you find safety and security.
U Visas and T Visas
Victims of certain crimes and human trafficking may be eligible for special visa categories that provide legal status and protection:
U Visas are available to victims of qualifying crimes (such as domestic violence, sexual assault, or other serious offenses) who have suffered substantial physical or mental abuse and are willing to assist law enforcement in the investigation or prosecution of the crime. Our firm has significant experience assisting clients who are victims or witnesses in a criminal case and need immigration protection through the U Visa process.
T Visas are available for individuals who have been victims of human trafficking or forced labor by an employer or another person who exploited them.
Both visa categories provide work authorization and can lead to permanent residency. Our team has extensive experience helping crime victims and trafficking survivors obtain the protection and legal status they deserve.
Medical Deferred Action
If you’re the parent of a U.S. citizen child with a serious medical condition, you may qualify for Medical Deferred Action. This program allows parents to remain in the United States to care for their child without fear of deportation.
Medical Deferred Action provides:
- Protection from removal proceedings
- Work authorization
- The ability to remain in the U.S. while your child receives necessary medical treatment
We help families navigate the Medical Deferred Action process, gathering the necessary medical documentation and presenting a compelling case to USCIS.
Travel Permits (Advance Parole)
If you have a pending adjustment of status application or other immigration matter, you may need advance parole to travel outside the United States and return legally. We assist clients in obtaining travel permits for:
- Family emergencies abroad
- Humanitarian reasons
Our team ensures your advance parole application is properly filed and approved before you travel, protecting your pending immigration case.
Consular Processing
For family members or beneficiaries who are outside the United States, consular processing is the pathway to obtaining an immigrant visa. We represent clients throughout the consular processing journey, including:
- Preparing and filing visa petitions
- Coordinating with the National Visa Center
- Preparing for consular interviews
- Responding to requests for additional documentation
- Addressing administrative processing delays
Our experience with U.S. consulates and embassies around the world ensures your case moves forward as efficiently as possible.
Immigration Appeals
If your immigration application has been denied or you’ve received an unfavorable decision from an immigration judge, you may have the right to appeal. Appeals are typically available after a final decision has been made by an immigration judge or authority. Our Phoenix immigration lawyers handle appeals at all levels, including:
- Appeals to the Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA)
- Motions to reopen or reconsider with USCIS
- Federal court appeals

Frequently Asked Questions About Immigration Law in Phoenix
How much does an immigration lawyer cost in Phoenix?
Immigration attorney fees vary depending on the type of case and its complexity. Simple matters like work permit renewals typically cost less than complex cases involving waivers or removal defense.
At Alonso & Alonso, we believe in transparent pricing. During your free case evaluation, we’ll provide you with a clear, upfront estimate of the costs for your specific case, no hidden fees, no surprises. We want you to understand exactly what you’re paying for and why.
Remember, your initial evaluation is always free, so you can get answers and understand your options without any financial commitment.
How much does it cost to get a green card in Phoenix?
The cost of obtaining a green card includes several components:
- Government filing fees (which vary depending on the type of green card application)
- Medical examination fees (required for most applicants)
- Translation and document preparation costs
- Attorney fees
The total cost can range from a few thousand dollars to significantly more for complex cases. During your free evaluation, we’ll review your specific situation and provide a detailed breakdown of the expected costs for your green card application.
What should I bring to my first consultation with an immigration lawyer?
To make the most of your consultation, bring any documents related to your immigration history and current situation, including:
- Government-issued identification (passport, driver’s license, etc.)
- Any immigration documents you have (visa, work permit, green card, etc.)
- Notices from USCIS, immigration court, or other government agencies
- Marriage certificates, birth certificates, or other family documents
- Criminal records or court documents (if applicable)
- Previous immigration applications or petitions
- A list of questions and your immigration goals
Don’t worry if you don’t have all of these documents—bring whatever you have. The most important thing is to be honest and thorough about your immigration history so we can give you accurate advice.
Do you offer services in Spanish?
Absolutely. Our Phoenix office is fully bilingual, with native Spanish speakers on staff. We provide all immigration services in both English and Spanish, and you can conduct your entire case in whichever language you’re most comfortable with.
We’re not just translating words—our team understands the cultural context of your immigration journey and can communicate with you in a way that truly resonates. As a Latino-led firm, we’re deeply connected to the community we serve.
How long does an immigration case typically take?
The timeline for immigration cases varies widely depending on several factors:
- Type of application or petition (some processes are faster than others)
- Your country of origin (visa availability varies by country)
- Which USCIS office or immigration court is handling your case (processing times differ)
- Whether there are complications (such as criminal issues or prior immigration violations)
Some cases can be resolved in a few months, while others may take a year or more. During your consultation, we’ll give you a realistic timeline estimate based on your specific circumstances and current processing times.
What if my case has been denied before?
A previous denial doesn’t necessarily mean your case is hopeless. There are often ways to overcome denials through appeals, motions to reopen, or new applications with stronger evidence.
We’ve helped many clients who were denied by other attorneys or who tried to handle their cases on their own. We’ll review what happened in your previous case, identify what went wrong, and determine whether there’s a path forward.
Don’t give up on your immigration goals just because you’ve faced a setback. Call us for a free case evaluation and let us explore your options.
Can I apply for a green card if I entered the United States illegally?
It depends on your specific circumstances. Some people who entered without inspection may still be eligible for green cards through certain pathways, such as:
- Family-based petitions (if you’re the immediate relative of a U.S. citizen)
- VAWA self-petitions (if you’ve been abused by a U.S. citizen or permanent resident)
- U visas or T visas (if you’re a victim of certain crimes, forced labor, or trafficking)
- Special immigrant categories
Other cases may require a waiver of unlawful presence or consular processing abroad. The answer depends on your individual situation, so it’s important to consult with an experienced immigration attorney who can evaluate your eligibility.
Ready to move forward? Call Alonso & Alonso at +1 (855) 663-4763 to schedule your free case evaluation with a Phoenix immigration lawyer today.
How can I schedule a free case evaluation with a Phoenix immigration lawyer?
You can easily schedule a free evaluation by calling our Phoenix office at +1 (855) 663-4763 or filling out the contact form on our website. During this initial, zero-cost evaluation, an experienced Phoenix immigration specialist will listen to your situation and ask questions to determine your eligibility for various immigration options. We provide honest guidance with no pressure, ensuring you understand all available pathways before committing to anything.
Do your Phoenix immigration attorneys handle T Visas, U Visas, or VAWA cases?
Yes. Our Phoenix immigration attorneys have extensive experience providing comprehensive legal support for vulnerable individuals. We specialize in humanitarian relief, including U Visas (for crime victims—subject to annual caps and current processing limitations), T Visas (for forced labor and human trafficking survivors), and VAWA self-petitions (for victims of abuse or mistreatment by a qualifying relative). We’ll provide honest guidance about current processing realities and your best path forward in the Phoenix area.
How can I tell if an immigration lawyer in Phoenix is experienced and trustworthy?
A reputable immigration lawyer in Phoenix should have a proven track record, positive client testimonials, and deep roots in the Arizona community. Look for an attorney who is a member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) and has specific experience handling complex cases like yours. A good lawyer will never promise a guaranteed outcome, but they will offer a clear, honest strategy during your initial consultation. At Alonso & Alonso, our 15+ years of experience and 4.7-star rating reflect our commitment to excellence and the trust we’ve built with Phoenix families.
What types of family-based immigration cases do your Phoenix immigration lawyers handle?
Our Phoenix immigration attorneys specialize in a wide range of family immigration cases, including parent-child petitions, sibling sponsorships, and other qualifying family relationships. However, we do not handle spousal visas or fiancé visa cases. We take a family-centered approach to ensure you and your loved ones can achieve residency and build a secure life together in the Phoenix area, focusing on complex humanitarian cases and family reunification matters where we can provide the most specialized support.
I have a prior criminal history; can an immigration lawyer in Phoenix still help me apply for a visa or waiver?
Yes, our firm specializes in complex cases, including those involving criminal history. While having a criminal record complicates the process, we are skilled at handling criminal history waivers and other specialized legal solutions to reduce the impact of past mistakes and fight for your path to becoming a lawful permanent resident. We take on cases other Phoenix attorneys often refuse.
How does a Phoenix immigration lawyer assist clients facing removal or deportation proceedings?
If you are facing removal proceedings, a dedicated Phoenix immigration lawyer from our team will provide an aggressive defense when necessary, develop a customized defense strategy, and appear with you at all court hearings. We fight to protect your right to stay in the U.S. and have won even the most challenging removal cases. Our experience with the Phoenix Immigration Court gives us unique insight into local procedures.
Is it worth using an immigration lawyer in Phoenix?
When you consider that a single mistake on an application can lead to a permanent bar from the U.S. or years of family separation, hiring a Phoenix immigration lawyer is an invaluable investment in your future. While there are upfront legal fees, the “cost of a mistake” is far higher—potentially resulting in lost filing fees, denied work permits, or even deportation.
A Phoenix immigration attorney is worth the investment because we provide:
- A “Safety Net” for Your Family: We ensure your case is filed correctly the first time, preventing the 12–24 month delays caused by “Requests for Evidence” (RFEs).
- Access to Work and Travel: By streamlining your Work Permit (EAD) and Travel Parole applications, we help you gain legal income and see your loved ones again faster than if you navigated the backlog alone.
- Protection Against Policy Changes: Immigration laws change frequently. We monitor these shifts to ensure your application remains compliant with the latest federal regulations.
- Creative Solutions for “Hard” Cases: If you’ve been told “no” before, a specialized lawyer can often find alternative paths—like U Visas or specialized waivers—that a non-lawyer would miss.
What does an immigration lawyer in Phoenix do?
An immigration lawyer in Phoenix acts as your legal guide and advocate through the complex U.S. immigration system. We do more than just fill out forms; we analyze your unique history to find the best legal path, represent you in front of USCIS or the Immigration Court, and prepare you for high-stakes interviews. Our role is to protect your rights, help you avoid costly application mistakes, and provide strategic solutions for challenges like case appeals or removal proceedings.
Can your Phoenix immigration lawyers help me obtain a Work Permit (EAD) while my visa petition is pending?
Yes. Our Phoenix immigration lawyers help eligible immigrants secure a Work Permit, also known as an Employment Authorization Document (EAD). We review your eligibility, prepare, and file the necessary Form I-765 to ensure you receive temporary authorization to work in the U.S. while your main petition is being processed.
Important Note: Under the current administration, obtaining work permits has become significantly more challenging, even for approved applicants. Based on our recent experience, U Visa applicants are currently the primary group successfully receiving EADs while their petitions are in progress. We’ll provide honest guidance about your specific situation and current processing realities.
How does an immigration lawyer in Phoenix facilitate Consular Processing for a family member living abroad?
We streamline the permanent residency process for family members outside the U.S., particularly those in Mexico. Our immigration lawyer in Phoenix coordinates with immigration authorities, prepares and files all required concurrent applications, and thoroughly prepares the family member for their consular interview in Ciudad Juárez or other consular locations to ensure the best possible chance of a successful outcome.
What questions should I ask an immigration lawyer in Phoenix?
When meeting with an immigration lawyer in Phoenix, it’s important to ask:
- “How many cases similar to mine have you successfully handled?”
- “Are you a member of professional organizations like AILA?”
- “Will you be the one appearing with me at my hearings and interviews?”
- “What is the total expected cost, including attorney fees and government filing fees?”
- “How often will I receive updates on the status of my case?”
Asking these questions ensures you choose a firm that offers the personalized attention and transparency your family deserves.
